Not only was impressed by the atmosphere and all the food, but to have 6 delicious soups on the menu all the time is great. Now i can go there to fix a hangover on Sunday afternoon or a cold on Tuesday night!!!

I thought this place was amazing! I cannot believe that they have less than five stars. The pomegranate margarita was the best I have ever had, the queso fondido also. Then we topped it off with mixed fajitas (sea bass, shrimp, chicken and carne). Honestly, my husband hates mexican food and he wants to come back next week! That never happens. And the server was amazing and the food out fast. Recommend it for everyone!

My wife and I hadn't been here in years. We used to be regulars. When we got there we were a little concerned because the place was empty and it used to be packed in the old days. We were meeting friends who had never been there. Long story short, food and service were both excellent. Sad that it never filled up.

The decor is stimulating. Cucumber jalapeo margs are fantastic. Happy hour is my new season. And I can't wait for valet. Can't wait to come back! The napkins are pink.

Not a lot of vegetarian options, but the stuff I can eat was great. They have corn on the cob as a side dish with lime and a nice crust, and it was just perfect. Yum!

Amazing, creative and unique menu. Great place to bring out-of-town guests since it's like nothing most people have seen. Brie and pickled pear quesadilla? YUMMY!! Everything on their menu is awesome but especially the appetizers. They have more traditional Mexican too, but it's all very thoughtful and not greasy. I remember the Halibut with red and green sauce being amazing, and their nachos are good too. They had some roasted red (or yellow?) pepper soup that was just fantastic also. Oh, and carrot corn bisque!!! I can't believe I'm remembering these details after 2 years not even living in Houston any more. Tila's is one of Houston's redeeming features. And tey are dog friendly too. Outdoor patio is nice and cozy even for being on Shepherd. And they have a great brunch.

This is not Tex-Mex, people. This is REAL Mexican fare (or so I've been told)!

I popped into Tila's with a group of about 10 friends last night for a late dinner and was immediately impressed. Our reservation was for 11, but the table ahead of us (large parties are often times hard to seat) had been sitting there for over 3.5 hours - a good sign, in my opinion. We walked up to the hostess stand and the nicest lady greets us and immediately apologizes that it may be another couple of minutes. Normally, I would be pretty annoyed that a reservation didn't seat on time, but she was so nice and offered to take our drink orders immediately and get the evening started. Later, I find out this is actually Tila herself. Anyways, long story short, she bent over backwards to make us feel welcome before we even sat down.

Appetizers: We had the ceviche, guacamole, marinated shrimp and the standard chips/salsa that are bought to each table. Right off the bat, I was VERY impressed with the freshness of the food. I am a huge fan of avocados and the guacamole was some of the best I have had in Houston. The ceviche, with shrimp, halibut, spices and avocados was definitely the best I've had while in Texas. The marinated shrimp were a huge hit as well. Chips and salsa are often times the first impression that you get of a place. I'm happy to report that they have some fantastic red and green sauce along with very light and crispy chips. I could eat these all day, but I decided to try the rest of the dishes as well. The chips go great with the nothing short of divine ceviche!

Main Course: After Tila (yes, she actually took our whole order as well) went through a long list of specials, my attention was completely distracted from the outstanding menu. I opted for one of the great specials she mentioned as she is quite the storyteller. She made them sound so great! Tila did not disappoint; my blackened Chilean Sea Bass with creamed spinach and black beans was excellent! The flavor was not too powerful and the texture was amazing. Fish can be a very hard dish to prepare well. Tila had not problem tackling the task. The creamed spinach was very good and the black beans didn't taste too heavy or like they had lard in them. Some of my friends had various dishes and they were equally as delighted. I am not sure how often she runs the blackened sea bass special, but this is a must try if you're a fish lover!

Drinks: The pomegranate, mango and raspberry margaritas were a hit with many in the group. I however opted for a mojito and was again pleasantly surprised. The drink was light and fresh and had a lot of mint (which I asked for). It was not too sweet and had a decent amount of rum in it.

Service: Throughout the meal, service was impeccable. Having Tila drop by occasionally along with the wait staff gave it a truly local home-style feel which very few places execute as well as Tila's does. Water was constantly topped off and people were asked if they wanted another round of drinks as they were preparing to finish their current one. Not too early, not too late.

Overall, I cannot rave enough about Tila's. If you are in the neighborhood with friends or out of town guests, this is a must. I've lived in Houston for 2 years and this is my first time here. You can be assured, I will be back here more and more often! Food pricing is reasonable and a huge if you consider the quality of food and service you are getting. Portion sizes are just right as well which is very refreshing for this type of restaurant. One note, this is not the same as TEALA'S which is also quite good and close to this location. Tila's is on Shepherd right before you get to Dallas. There is nothing like this place in Houston. This is truly a gem of "Clutch City."

fantastic! this place is so cute and their food is great as well. they serve chips and fried plantains with salsa as soon as u sit down..the fried plantains are great and so is the salsa. The Sangria is really good as well. Your really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. The fideo is yummy and their brunch menu is outstanding. Next time ur there try a peach fuzztini...its a new twist on ur average mimosa...you won't be sorry :) It's a great crowd and the restrooms are clean which is always a plus! This is one of my favorite places in houston.

MAKE YOUR OWN TAMALES are unbelievably good. Their entire menu is awesome, the mojitos and drink are great as well. A little on the pricey side, but the service and food are worth it, they have a big rent bill to pay I bet at that location.

I have been a fan of Tila's for nearly 5 years now. And I gotta say, the food is more consistent than any other place I've been to in Houston! The service on the other hand... has almost always been inconsistent. I actually started requesting the waiters I knew were good, and steering clear of the ones i knew weren't.

First off, who doesn't love that warm salsa roja and salsa verde accompanied by tortilla and plantain chips that immediately gets brought to the table when you sit down. Mmmmmmm...

Next matter at hand... everything is good! Yes really. If I could eat this much food, this is what I would get: Cucumbers and Jicama appetizer, fideo soup, and the Huachinango (red snapper).

Lately I've been coming here for the brunch. Its never so busy I have to wait and the food is amazing. The fruit plate comes with the best banana bread I've ever encountered. And the patio with an air conditioned fan and great view of everyone waiting to get seated across the street at backstreet cafe is great!

Tila herself is usually somewhere to be found in the restaurant. I once had a waiter from there tell me she was a witch. Well she can keep putting spells on that food cause damn its good!

Oh yeah and as for the bar... definitely over priced Tequila but they do boast some 70 different Tequilas or so.

Next time you go to Tila's, be sure and look around inside... she has pigs and dragonfly as decor all over the place! I see a new one every time I go.

Tila's is a great roll in on a Friday and hang out on the patio with your flip flops kinda place. Mainly, go there for the huge tequila selection they have. Ask for a tequila menu. There are at least 50 different kinds of anejo, reposado blanco etc listed. Have it served margarita up with a little salt. Their margarita mix cuts through the muskiness and heat of the tequila while still enjoying its complexity and long finish. Corazon, Oro Azul, Cabo Wabo, El Tesoro just to name a few to try. Don't go with the familiar Parton, Don Julio and Sauza, be adventurous.
Tila's has a lighter more refined Tex Mex better suited for people not looking to get filled up with lard, greasy cheese and mass amounts of meats. They do a good fresh guacamole with large chunks of avocados and a good squeeze lime juice for acidity. The queso fundidois not swimming in grease and contains big chunks of bell peppers and onions mixed in with shrimp, fajita beef or chicken. The cheese is more like a mozzarella - light and tangy. Try the grilled scallions. Its sweet and crunchy like a flavorful celery stick. Main dishes I have less experience on this but I do know their refried black beans are spicy hot so watch out.

From a CitySearch review I wrote back when I first went there and lived in Houston:

While their mexican food may not be 'authentico' it is muy excellente! They will make it as spicy as you like [and for a gal from San Antone, that's pretty darn spicy!] and will not forget to check on your table. Their margaritas, compared to most of those I've tried my year and a half of living in Houston, actually are pretty darn good :) Their salsa is decent, and pleasant - and their fun mixture of chips and fried plantains are enjoyable.
I have to admit, though, I am taken by their endive-stuff chicken - it's amazing. And I mean that - A-MA-ZING! If you haven't been to Tila's (like I hadn't before a few months ago) what are you waiting for?

If you think it looks adorable located on the curve on S Shepard, just wait till you park and go on inside! I NEED to know who decorated that place because it is so gorgeous, magical, and cute - I would love my house to have that feel.

A feast for the tummy and the eyes :)

Went back again the other weekend and was just as impressed as the first go-around. Tried the shredded chicken nachos to start - AWESOME.

This has quickly become my favorite Mexican restaurant in Houston. I've never had to wait, the service is good-to-great, and the food is reasonably priced and WONDERFUL.

    I'm a very big fan.

From the first time I was drawn in by the dragonfly on the front of the building, I knew that I'd found something off the beaten path to Tex-Mex in Houston. Usually people have expectancies when they hear Mexican or Tex-Mex, which decreases their ability to enjoy something truly different. I went into this restaurant without any idea of what I was getting into and I came out a fan.

I really enjoy warm salsa...makes my mouth water, just thinking about it, and Tila's delivered a tasty salsa with chips. For my main course, I asked our always friendly waitress to suggested a dish and she showed me the Chicken Endive. It was different than any chicken dish I've ever eaten and my taste buds fell madly in love. My friends and I have tried several other dishes, and although my mouth always craves what it loves, everything I've tried is good.

I've eaten here three times, once for lunch and twice for brunch. I had the roasted chicken for lunch and it was delish. I can't remember what the dish is called that I had for brunch (could be migas?), but it is also fanTAStic! It's scrambled eggs with salsa, cheese, and crumbled tortilla chips mixed in. Soooo yummy! Their version of mimosas (called something else and slightly different) are wonderful and potent.

The atmosphere is terrific, both outside on the gorgeous patio and inside with all the quirky mix of decorations.

A more refined City Mex rather than your usual T-M fare. Think margaritas in martini glasses and grilled pork tenderloin with a basil-mint sauce. Menu is varied with a number of nightly specials. Quality ingredients and good presentation. Portions are satisfying without being overwhelming. I appreciate not feeling like I need to ask the waiter to set half of the portion aside so I have a chance of finishing the remainder.

We went on a Tuesday evening and enjoyed a quiet conversation with our meal, but I have seen it pretty packed on weekends. Decor is Mexican theme eclectic with a high ceiling and lots of artwork. They have an outdoor terrace, but it borders on the parking lot and is pretty close to a busy stretch of Shepherd St. so I wouldn't call it peaceful, but still on many nights it would be an attractive setting for dinner.

Seems like all the reviews are really scattered with a lot of highs and lows; I am so glad my experience was an amazing one. Eating at Tila's was really the highlight of my Saturday night.

So... My boyfriend and I were driving around in search of good food. I was somewhat dressed up, as was he, and when he said "Mexican-Food" I sort of cringed and thought, "er, well I don't want to get mugged." He assured me it wasn't a "dirty Mexican restaurant" (just as he assured me that my previous comment was pretty racist, sorry) and he was right, both times.

After arriving, the complimentary valet drove my car away and we walked inside to immediately be seated at a quieter corner table. Our server was beyond wonderful. He brought out an extensive list of tequilas from which my boyfriend ordered two shots of the Riazul Anejo. Our waiter offered him a shot containing OJ, tomato juice, and hot sauce. It sounded odd but we ordered one. When I ordered my margarita our server gave me 2 options: "on the rocks" or in a martini glass with a carafe in ice. I chose the latter. He promptly brought out a bucket of chips and salsas, and our drinks. The presentation was so cute and my margarita was pretty damn skippy. My boyfriend loved his shots and the "after-shot" was perfect after the tequila. The chips come with both tortilla and banana chips, which is different. The Filipino-pride in me was appeased by the banana chips.

Our server recommended the Swiss Cheese Souffle so we ordered it... Outstanding. It was the perfect appetizer. The souffle was light, creamy, cheesy, and so delicious. It came with some crostinis and it was so satisfying. I couldn't have asked for more or less.

My boyfriend ordered the Carne Asada (+beans&rice, and corn tortillas), and I ordered the Spicy Pork Tender Medallions (+sauteed greenbeans&mushrooms, chipotle mashed potatoes, and flour tortillas). The Carne Asada was packed with flavor and our server brought both a garlic lime butter and some kind of salsa for dipping - both also very good. I will fight to the end and say my Pork Medallions rocked his carne asada's socks off. The medallions were stuffed with endive and cheese and sat on top of a wine demi-glaze. I've never liked any red wine in my food but they did it so well I was sopping it up with my mashed potatoes. I rarely finish a plate in a restaurant unless I'm totally enamored by it... there was nothing left on my plate but bits of green bean. Lastly, we ordered the Tres Chocolates dessert. I wasn't a huge fan, but then again, I don't really love chocolate in my dessert.

If you're looking for Mexican food with a little more class and creativity, Tila's hits the spot. I don't know Spanish... but I know that food was "muy rico" and I'm going to have to learn how to say "Thank you for the excellent service," and, "I want to go to Tila's again... now."

    I'm in LOVE!
After a long night at the cook off the boyfriend and I woke up craving chips and salsa. We yelped chips and salsa, and we were directed to Tila's. This place is a small taste of heaven. Everything was AMAZING!

    1. The chips are not overly greasy or salty. The plantain chips were a nice change, and very yummy. The red and green salsa was amazing. I haven't been to any other place with salsa like that.

    2. The service was perfect. Our server was very attentive. We never had an empty glass.

    3. The Sangria is not made with Brandy, which is totally awesome in my book. I had to limit myself to one glass, but I probably could have had a gallon or two. It's not overly sweet, and still had a taste of wine.

    4. The menu... Everything looked so good. I ordered the "roll your own taquitos" mmmm... I'm getting hungry just thinking about them. The chicken was kinda of dry, but the beef was perfect.

    5. The atmosphere was perfect. Nice patio, even though our table was held together by zip ties. The inside is kind of small, but pretty.

    6. Valet.- Complementary, but they did mess up on our friend's car.

Overall, this place is pretty fabulous.

What can I say? Every time I have been to Tila's it has been fantastic. The menu has a great authentic feel with a wide variety of flavors and foods for everyone. From the first time I have been over 8 years ago till now it has been amazing.

Starting of from the time you arrive until the time you leave the service is great! You will enjoy the atmosphere outside on cool summer nights with the small chimeneas to the blankets and heaters available. Also, the tequila list is long and has a wide variety, which makes a great option for their margaritas.

One thing that really captured me was the fried plantains tucked away in the bucket of thin, crispy chips cooked to perfection. The red and green sauces for dipping are mucho delicioso, but I prefer the red over the green because it is spicy.

The owner is great as well! She will come by and talk to you, make some great recommendations for what you like and help match with a great margarita. The food is simply divine and as i said covers a wide variety, which I love.

I have been there many weeks and I feel like I am becoming a regular to one of the best places in Houston. I cant wait to go back and have some of their tres leches, or Tila-Misu!!!

Forget about the traditional Tex-Mex and take a break from the Houston hustle and bustle and escape with a nice Margarita to Tila's right off of Shepherd and Memorial!

  • *****

This is one of my favorite places in Houston. I love going out for drinks and dinner on the patio. Everything I've tried has been delicious! Their tequila list is outstanding.

  • *****

Itila's isn't traditional Tex-Mex or even traditional Mexican. They have a lot of seafood dishes on the menu and most of their other dishes kick it up a notch. Prices for entrees start around $13 and go up from there. Dinner specials start around $18.

Dinner started with complimentary chips (and a few surprise fried plantains) and two salsas, one a warm tomatillo and the other a roasted tomato. Both were very good. Next came the margaritas. Very good as well. They either uses Roses or fresh key limes for their margaritas so they are slightly on the tart side. Nothing sweet about them at all. The margarita menu isn't very helpful, and prices run from about $7 to $11 depending on your tequila.

Two in our party, including myself, had the shrimp enchilada special. The shrimp was a little over cooked. The other person in our party had the crab tostada special.

Complimentary valet parking is available and I recommend you use it since street parking is challenging. The restaurant itself is pretty small. There is a nice bar area when you first walk in and the dining area is pretty cramped. It can get a little noisy when it;s crowded. There is an outdoor seating area but at 6.00 on a July evening, I would have needed a lot of margaritas to stay cool.

    Recommended for upscale Mexican.

Tila's is good. It is not exactly mexican, and it is not exactly american, and it is really not Tex-Mex, but it has definite influences of all of those.

I had a blackened snapper with a poblano pepper cream sauce, with a side of roasted corn onthe cob. It was all very good. The margarita was fantastic. With over 80 tequilas, ther eis no lacking in options. I prefer my margaritas on the rocks, and they brought them out in a little pitcher on ice, so I could balance my 'rita to rocks ratio.

I had a very good time and I intend to go back.

I have driven by this place so many times and didn't stop by. The decor is a bit odd.. ( pigs everywhere), but in my opinion, quirky is always a good thing!

I finally came here on a date with my man. He loves this place and swears that this is the only place he can get carne asada like he used to have it back home in Guatemala.

I ate here in the fall and immediately I was impressed with the seasonal menu. I ordered a poblano pepper that was stuffed with beef, pine nuts and seasoned with numerous autumn spices such as clove and nutmeg. It was the most interesting thing I had eaten in a long time, interesting in a great way!

The service was perfect. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

I can't wait to go back and see what she has on the menu for the summer!

This is an incredible place. The food is so fresh and the staff is very attentive. I l love her cerviche. Today only, they have a great offer on MyDailyDeals.com . Buy the voucher for $20 and get $40 worth of food (excludes alcohol, tip, and tax...of course). The offer ends at midnight tonight. The margaritas are to die for. No cheap mixers...just fresh lime juice and the best tequila selection in town.

I love this place. The food is great and so is the atmosphere! Nachos Bandeleros and cheese enchildas with ancho sauce are my favorite.

I've had the pleasure of eating here about a dozen times in the past year or so. I work nearby. Everything is excellent. It is definitely a unique style. The margaritas are the absolute best.....for Tequila connoisseurs. You have to order them with an anejo tequila, my favorite is Chinaco. Never frozen or on the rocks, remember this place is unique. Order the margarita "neat" which is to say chilled, in a martini glass in a small galvanized tub of ice with a carafe to refill it. The presentation is unlike any margarita you've had before and the taste is amazing. I like to end the meal with a "bandera" which is three shots. One of lemon juice, one of Tequila and the final chaser of "sangrita" a bloody mary like mix. Tila's is a one of a kind experience that you have to know how to navigate to truly enjoy.

  • *****

Love the ambiance here. Their sopa de fideo is unbelievable--wish the bowls were bigger! Also the roll your own taquitos are good. I love the salsa and the plantain chips. Margaritas are great...Oh--if you like mushrooms the sopa de hongos is great also.

This was my favorite restaurant over three days of dining out in Houston.

Finally we had a waiter who seemed professional and gave good, polished service.

The outdoor patio is nice and cheerful despite traffic whizzing by on the busy adjacent street. If it's chilly, the waiters will bring out blankets for patrons to place on their lap or wrap around themselves.

Managers came out twice just to check and make sure we were enjoying our meal.

The guacamole was different than I had seen anywhere else. Most places puree or mash the avocado, but here it was cut into cubes. That said, it was still very tasty, just somewhat difficult to get pile onto tortilla chips.

The free chips and salsa were good and there were fried plantains mixed in among the tortilla chips. The salsas seemed fresh and tasty, but I wish they had been a little thicker.

All of the entrees looked tasty. My first choice (cod) was sold out, so I had a red snapper cooked with almonds and garlic cloves. Delicious and healthy! The sides of spinach and roasted potatoes were also very good, although it would have been nice if the potatoes had been crispier.

My sister had chicken enchiladas with a mole sauce that I also thought was really good, although it did have a spicy slow-build kick to it.

I ordered an horchata ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ho ) which turned out to be a bit too sweet for me (tasted like drinking rose water), but it did help to tame the spice from the mole.

Prices were more reasonable than the other Houston restaurants we visited. Of the half-dozen restaurants and food shops that I tried in Houston, this is the only one where I would want to eat again.

  • *****

Delicious, and reasonably priced. Innovative Mexican food. Had the Crab tostadas and they were quite good. PS - Ask them to put a shot of tequila into your Dos Equis...changed my life!

  • *****

We tried a few of the huge tequila selection, pork medalions with red wine sauce, and grilled salmon. Everything was delicious, even the salsa and chips. As other reviewers said, it's not texmex, which I liked. The rice wasn't bathed in lard and the grilled veggies were just right.

  • *****

Great unique and innovative Mexican food. Delicious sides and awesome margaritas (if a little small - it's quality over quantity). A little upscale without being too pricy.

  • *****

The ONLY reason I give this 4 out of 5 is because the tables are small and cramped in there. But the service, the food, the ambiance is all phenomenal. AND you can actually eat on the low cal, healthy side if you choose to do so!

Took my mom here today for Mother's Day, and we really had some delicious food, and an interesting experience.

We were greeted first thing by two valet's, who handed my mom a flower as soon as they helped her out of the car. Nice touch.

When we got inside there was what I can only explain as mass confusion. The woman at the hostess stand, I was fairly sure, was in the midst of her very first day of work. She was struggling with getting some people situated in the bar section, and then when she came to us, she had to play around with the computer for several minutes before she looked at a piece of paper and found all of the reservations on paper. It was just...odd.

What I didn't know, and what makes this more humorous for me, is that the new hostess? Yeah, that was Tila.

If you haven't been here, the atmosphere is different and fun, if not a little cramped. We didn't mind any of that, and actually found it quite charming. There were only two waiters in the entire place, but they were incredibly polite and efficient and just plain fun. Our waiter, Ben, not only made suggestions, but even made time to chat with us. We never once felt rushed or pushed even though it was clear they were under staffed for the day.

We were given chips and plantains along with two salsas before the meal. They were both delicious, however, like other reviewers, they were a little thin for my taste.

My mom had a mimosa that clearly was made from fresh squeezed OJ. My margarita was amazing, and made from fresh lime juice. Fantastic drinks.

For the meal, Mom had the chipotle shrimp, creamed spinach (best I have EVER had in my life) and roasted potatoes (with a kick). I had the halibut with black beans (incredible, by the way) and garlic mashed potatoes (with Rosemary!). Both meals were amazing.

For the price of the meals (both around $20), we would come again. The food was inventive and different and worth a try. The experience was...different, but I think that came from the odd, uncomfortable feeling coming from Tila...the rest of the help was more than perfect and made up for it.

i love tilas... great food, fresh and delicious and excellent choices for Tequila! over 85 to choose from.. yummy. Tilas is always there and so friendly.

Not your typical Tex-Mex. Great patio when the weather is good. Ask the bartender to help you pick a tequila for your margarita.

    I love this restaurant!

It's not the typical Mexican restaurant you may be used to. It is very quiet, relaxing and romantic. The staff is VERY friendly and make you feel right at home. The prices are a bit high and the amount of food is not much but it is delicious. The desserts are delicious as well. My boyfriend and I had the tiramisu and we loved it.

We had some alcoholic drinks that I cannot remember the name of but they were pretty good as well.

I would definitely go back! :)

At first glance, you'll think this little restaurant on a triangle piece of property in the middle of hustling bustling River Oaks streets will be impossible to get to and crazy expensive....you will be wrong.

    Good:
Parking available just behind and around the corner from the restaurant...yes folks, you'll have to walk a block.
The warm red salsa - delicious!
Decor - fun, cute patio, great space indoors...decorated with pigs.
Great place for brunch - arrive early, the secret is out on Tila's!
Chiliquiles - small portions, but perfect for after you have gorged on chips.

    Bad:
Our service was bad - bad enough for a 15% tip to the penny - not sure if this was just because it was 10am on Sunday and we were the first guests...but we were walking to the bar to refresh our own waters.

Overall, great little place - casual, come in jeans, workout clothes, or dressed to the nines, you'll fit in and have a great meal.

I've only ever been here for breakfast, but what fantastic breakfasts they were!

When we pulled up into the parking lot, the valet insisted he park our car, which made no sense. The valet literally got in the car and took a sharp left into the available spot he'd stopped me in front of. I tipped him a buck, but I probably shouldn't have because it took 5 minutes to find him when we were done eating and he refused to just give me the keys to my car so that he could back it out of the parking spot not ten feet from the restaurant's front door. UGH! So, maybe don't give your keys to the pushy valet.

It was a more of a semi-casual feel to the place. I really liked the patio seating under a large, beautiful pergola, though our only view was of the street and parking lot. The food was so good that I forgot how annoyed I was with the valet taking my car keys.

The Toad in a Hole was my favorite - the toast well buttered and the eggs cooked just PERFECTLY! The fruit I ordered was fresh and I could tell it had just been put together because each piece had it's own flavor (you know if they put it all together and lumped it into a bowl for you when each piece has the same weird fruit salad taste to it - not the case here!!).

Definitely plan to go back... and park my car in the neighborhood. I'd prefer a hike than to give someone a very undeserved dollar. Then again I might also consider tipping the guy for letting me park my own damn car in the parking lot.

love this late night spot...they stay open till 12 on the weekends and it is a great solid late dinner. Me and my honey always get the grilled chicken breast which is always tender and juicy and it comes with tortillas so its like the perfect chicken fajitas. The best sides are the roasted potatoes and the creamy spinach(its to die for).. the best place to sit is by the bar as the ambiance is very lovely!

  • *****

My friend used to work here and recommended I check it out. This is the kind of place I think Houstonians should be promoting. Definitely not your typical Tex-Mex junk. Tila's offers a refreshing and wide variety of authentic and fusion mexican dishes. I usually order the Milanesa and love the taste and portion. The chips are accompanied with plantains which is something you don't see very often. The decor is very cozy and artsy, very reflective and appropriate considering the area. Overall the food and service keeps me wanting more. The only problem I see is with the parking. I usually choose to park and walk a few streets instead of dealing with the valet service. But that doesn't bother me too much, come one guys, how much walking do we really ever do in Houston??

Love this place. Great patio and 'ritas. Yeah, it's expensive, but it's in River Oaks, IE, the locals are fine with it.

Why in the world would Yelp suggest this is in the Washington Corridor, or even more absurdly, in the Heights? THE HEIGHTS? Yelp. Get a map. This is squarely in River Oaks.

I've been here twice now, once for a birthday brunch and once for dinner the other night. This place totally passes all my initial 'tests' -- warm beautiful decor, friendly staff, tasty food. The bonuses are why I really like it.

First, it's a great place for group parties. They'll put together a truncated menu for your event, so guests only have to choose between a few choices in each category rather than the whole menu. Plus, Tila, the proprietress, pops over to your table to welcome you and explain your event's fare. She's lovely.

Second, there's a dizzying array of tequila to choose from. You can get your fix in a margarita, as a shot, or whatever other tequila-ed libation you might want. Also, related to that, their margaritas are great (though maybe a bit heavy on the triple sec last night). In my opinion, no one should ever use a margarita mix, and they don't -- all fresh ingredients.

Finally, the food is delicious. Their Mexican brunch may be my favorite part of the menu (only during brunch times, not all day, unfortunately -- makes it all the more precious). The meals have a comforting homey quality, but the flavors are complex enough that I never feel like I could've made it myself.

All in all, a great little restaurant. I'll be back.

Hands down the best margaritas I've ever had. They freshly squeeze the limes in front of your (some reviewers claims there's a mix, amazingly). Appetizers were outstanding (try the souffle) and service was spot on. My new favorite Mexican restaurant in Houston.

Had brunch here when in Houston last month and have to say it was incredible. Definitely going back next time I'm i town...

After a long day of work, we decided to visit Tila's restaurant...and of course, it was fabulous. From the decor to the menu, everything was delightful. We started with a house margarita, grilled scallions, and grilled corn. The appetizers were fresh and flavorful - full of zest and spiciness. We then chose the Shrimp Chile Relleno and the Garlic Snapper. Wholly Guacamole -- they were delicious! My favorite was of course the Chile Relleno.

We ended the meal with the Lime Tart and Amaretto Coffee. The Lime Tart was fresh, light, tart, and beautifully presented, and the coffee was served with a side of fresh, homemade cinnamon-vanilla whipped cream. The coffee was truly delicious. If only refills were included. :D

It also must be noted that our waitress, Shery, was FABULOUS. She was conversational, engaging, and helpful. I can't wait to ask her to serve us again. Thank you for all of your suggestions with the menu!!

In an attempt to make myself exercise, I came up with the bright idea to run to brunch Sunday morning....I thought a quick jaunt to Barnaby's would be a good reward to a 3 mile run...and I could walk back, LOL

On the way to Barnaby's I started to smell this fantastic aroma of breakfast tacos, delicious pepper, and spices... I followed my nose on over to Tila's where I noticed that they opened at 10a.m. My watch read 10:11a.m. SCORE!

I can't remember the last time I had been to Tila's but I am pretty sure it involved Margarita's. I didn't even know this place served brunch. We sat outside, which was a bit chilly, but sunny, and beautiful, after working up an appetite.

The server immediately came over, which he was cherry, and super informative with lots of suggestions, and conversation. (not obnoxious though)

We decided upon the breakfast special which was a potato pancake, and eggs, along with my roll your own breakfast tacos, both were fantastic.

The salsa come with breakfast and is served warm, I love warm salsa.

The coffee was excellent, and the breakfast tacos that I had I almost licked the plate. The eggs were spicy, the tortillas fresh and homemade, and the potatoes were great! The service again was some of the best I have had in a long long time. He spoke about what they serve in the evening.

The atmosphere is super cute, very inviting, and small without being a large cookie cutter chain. They have ample outdoor seating, and a small bar, lots and lots of tequila. They also have a very tongue in cheek menu which made me laugh.

Will definitely be back for brunch and dinner. Well worth making myself run on over there!

I have been here twice. The first time was late night after several adult beverages, and just recently for lunch. My first visit I just needed something to soak up the alcohol and chill for a bit. I just had simple chicken quesadilla. From what I remember it was good...anyway on to my lunch.

The building itself is cute as can be. All adobe, a tiny bar, with a great patio outside. The service is always prompt, very friendly, and professional. It is clear this is not a place to get cheap Tex-Mex. It is not stuffy at all, and very comfortable, just not the typical cheap makeshift Tex-Mex spot.

I had one of the lunch specials. Chilean Sea Bass with shrimp, roasted potatoes and grilled veggies. Everything was fresh and very tasty. The fish was like butter, just melt in your mouth good. The veggies are fresh and grilled/sauteed perfectly. The sauce that came with the fish is amazing. My waiter continued to come by and check on me. He obviously cares about the product.

This place is great. There are way to many cheap and generic Tex-Mex places in Houston. Not here, it is a little more money wise. Though still not expensive. It is obvious that the quality is just so much better here. I will continue to support these guys.

Hugely surprised this charming little place only has an average of 3 stars. I'm not a fan of Tex Mex or most Mexican food. But this place is wonderful. The food is fresh, beautifully seasoned and has a lovely degree of sophistication

  • *****

Tila's taco truck is such a great experience. We hosted a birthday party and all ages enjoyed the delicious food, personal service and unique venue. We would certainly repeat this fun party in a truck!

  • *****

Great food, great service! We had the guacamole and a kiwi margarita to start, then for dinner we had enchiladas and quesadillas. Everything tasted perfect.

  • *****

Only 3 stars? I love this place. It's perfect for a casual date night, especially in the spring/summer when you can sit out on the patio. DELICIOUS margaritas and the food is amazing as well. I get tired of the typical Mexican food (burritos, tacos, etc) so this is a nice change of pace.

  • *****

Went for sunday brunch , the place is small... The food was good, with the mexican flavor , and the service was outstanding

  • *****

    Fresh Fresh Fresh!
    Fresh, tasty, flavorful ceviche.
Fresh Snapper dish. Delicious tortilla soup.

Fresh margaritas made with fresh squeezed limes, not the nasty cheap sweet and sour mix that other places use.

We went late thursday night. no crowd. it was nice

  • *****

Had brunch here yesterday, and had a great experience. Ordered a special, which was delicious.

Consumed the best margarita I have ever had - seriously, sets the bar for these drinks moving forward.

And our server was excellent. The music was a nice touch, though I thought it was a little loud.

Will definitely be back one day, if only for a superb margarita.

  • *****

Margaritas done right - from scratch, which doesn't leave the synthetic sugar mouth of your usual store bought mixers. The Fideo, Pollo Alongo, and Chicken Mole Enchiladas were perfect in every way. If you want AUTHENTIC Mexican, not Tex-Mex, this is the place. I will keep coming here for years.

  • *****

Definitely underrated! Good service, one of the best patios, margaritas were fresh as promised, interesting favors on the menu. Will definitely be back!

  • *****

Fortunately, I live just around the corner from Tila's so I am there often. I have tried most items on the menu and simply love the carne asada with garlic sauce and oven roasted potatoes. The corn on the cob with lime butter and chilli powder is to die for.

As for drinks, order a margarita in a martini glass. The place has more tequilas than I can count and if you ask nicely the owner will impart some of her vast knowledge about each one.

During the Spring and Fall months when the weather is just right, Tila's outside deck is one of the best places to sip a margarita and enjoy dinner.

  • *****

My wife and I were in Houston for a wedding and wanted to grab a bite the night of our arrival. I have to say I was impressed by the Tila's. We are enthusiasts of Mexican food, and this place did not miss the mark.

Although we prefer our tortilla chips warm, and my wife's Halibut was a bit over cooked, all was tasty. Definitely try the Chicken Manchego, I had that. Very flavorful and filling. We has the Ceviche as well, which was delightful.

Our waiter was the best...he was friendly, knowledgable, and comfortably chatty. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed his humor and wit just as much as the food.

  • *****

Best place in town for fine Mexican dining with matching decor and atmosphere. They have an extensive tequila menu. Everything is great but my favorites are the brie and pear quesadilla, Chilaquiles, and Caldo De Pollo Tlalpeno. The severs are courteous and quick. If its crowded it can be a little loud but mostly this isnt a problem.

  • *****

Have been here a dozen times and it's just as good every single time. If you are looking for tex-mex, this is not the place for you. It is clean, pure, authentic, wonderful mexican food. I get the Chilaquiles almost every time and it's better than what I've had in Mexico. The stuffed avocado is great & the pork medallions are melt in your mouth! The margaritas served in a martini glass are wonderful. The decor is so cozy & fun and my favorite part is not being in some gross chain restaurant that you find on the corner of every street in Houston. Tila herself is there most nights so if you ever have an issue just ask for her!

  • *****

Great margaritas. Sea bass was the daily special and it was truly special. The severs were really attentive and ensured all was well.

  • *****

Love the atmosphere - great little adobe style restaurant with interesting art throughout and a great patio. Love their chips and salsa and the fact they bring plantain chips. I usually only come here for brunch. Eggs sardou (eggs benedict) done on artichoke halves with spinach is always excellent. Potato pancakes are great as well. One of houston best tequila bars if you're into that. Not sure why this place gets so many negative reviews...I have always found Tilas to be an above and beyond experience compared to typical tex-mex in the area.

  • *****

This review is for their taco truck. We had their fish, shrimp, chicken and beef fajita tacos today and they were amazing! The grilled corn was so good. They were parked at the Vapor Gypsy in The Height today. Good service. A little pricey at $29 but the food was good! If their food truck was this good, I'm sure the restaurant is amazing!

  • *****

You seriously need to try this place if you haven't been.

Service was good with the chefs coming out to see how everything was and our server; or more like servers were happy to be there and engage in conversation while not being intrusive.

Food was great. Today we had ceviche, chips and guacamole, chicken fajitas, carne asada, and dessert one of the servers suggested.

Tilas like it was today, definitely deserves more reviews 3 or better and not 1's.

  • *****

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but picked 4 because I literally ate everything put in front my face.

Plantain chips are my favorite and they usually bring them out mixed in with tortilla chips. I use the word usually here lightly - sometimes its an equal chip to chip ratio and sometimes I can only find a handful in the pail. And they charge for an extra serving of chips, not paying for that so I just deal with the tortilla chips. Those are fine too.

We came here on a Tuesday night. Kind of empty but its always like that. We got the stuffed mushrooms and guac to start. The guac is my version of a single serving but its good....I guess I can share. Stuffed mushrooms are real good. Crab, cheese and some sort of fried dealio on top. I ordered the Camerones Asado (sp?). Spicy shrimp in a creamy red sauce with grilled veggies. The bf got the carne asada and mom got the crab tostadas. All so good!

My internal struggle with three stars was the waiter. He was like a used car salesman. Everything was an up-sell. EVERYTHING. We asked for a tequila recommendation for our margs, he picked the most expensive one on the menu. I told him absolutely not homeboy, lets have a middle priced one please. Then he tried the same thing when we were ordering. Its just annoying and honestly unprofessional. Some of the other reviews have talked about how strange the service is and I agree, quirky and somewhat off is the best way to describe it. Have never had to deal with Tila herself but based off what I have read, I wouldn't want to.

  • *****

We had a very enjoyable meal on Saturday night. We were a group of eight and let our waiter know that we had an 8:00 performance to attend downtown. Service was friendly and expeditious. We even had time for coffee after dinner. The entire group confirmed the food was outstanding. So convenient to downtown when you have events to attend. We'll be back!

Had Brunch at Tilas for the first time today! The food was amazing... wonderful bottomless mimosa special and the customer service was the best! Our servers name was Oleg and he was not only friendly but my mimosa was refilled every time I was nearly empty :) My husband and I adored the ambiance as well. All in all I will be a new regular!

  • *****

I came here one Sunday after being told there would be over a two hour wait across the street at Backstreet Cafe. I haven't stopped coming here since. The food is great and the servers have always been friendly towards me and my dog. This place has become my favorite brunch spot.

  • *****

This is the closest to authentic Mexican we've had in Houston area. I've been searching for Chilaquiles in what seems like forever, and every other restaurant the waiter just gives us the look of "Chila...what?" Tila's has them for brunch on Sundays and regular entree.
We ordered enchiladas and the carne asada, the carne asada was delicious. Enchiladas were really good too, not drenched in cheese or grease, sauce was just right.
Service was a tad bit slow, but, our waitress was very kind and they also allowed us to get some cashback to tip our valet.
The location is good (must use valet though), the restaurant itself is very quaint and original. I love the idea of having cocktails on the patio after it cools down a bit.

Was on my way to a local spot when I saw Tilas.
Stopped in for lunch and was blown away by the food.
I knew I was in for something different when I walked in the door.
    Very quaint and warm decor.
The menu offered many of the usual tex-mex offerings but also an outstanding variety of Mexican dishes.

I decided to play it safe with the chicken enchiladas.
What hit was an amazing presentation and stunning flavors.
Prior to being given served my entre, I was treated to chips and salsa. But was expected didn't happen.
The chips were a mix of corn chips and plantain.
They were complemented by two stunning warm salsas. A tomatillo and a red salsa that is to die for.

Do yourself a favor and make Tilas your next excursion.

  • *****

The decor is excellent, inviting and authentic. The place is a little small, but it adds to the experience. The menu had many choices, all seeming delicious. The food was amazing!! Not what I would call authentic Mexican, but very unique and all the flavors were spot on. Everything was extremely fresh, and I have no complaints whatsoever. Our waiter was very nice and made us feel very comfortable. The service was quick and attentive. I never had to ask for a refill!
We will definitely be back again to try other dishes, and hopefully next time we will have room to try the delicious sounding desserts!
I highly recommend this place to anyone!

  • *****

So good. I have tried plantains multiple times hoping I will like them, but never do...until today. That was just the beginning. Everything was delicious. We were so full and satisfied, but we still ordered dessert to go. Can't wait to try it. I'll be back.

  • *****

We came because I thought it was cool to see a restaurant in the middle of the road. I got chilaquiles and finished the whole plate, it's a good sign but also bad because the portion are a little small. I guess we are used to getting a ridiculous amount of food, just disappointed I didn't have leftovers for tomorrow. Would come back for breakfast and try that.

  • *****

The service was pretty good. I had the fajita enchiladas which were spicy but tasty. I like that they don't overload you with food. I would come back.

  • *****

This place is an absolute gem! I am always extremely satisfied each and every time I go there! Margaritas are the best in Houston, and the assorted bread basket is phenomenal! Perfect Sunday brunch spot!

  • *****

I don't know who the hell the people below my comment are that gave Tila 4 or less stars. They have to be the type of people that think texmex is Mexican food. This is one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants I have been to. The atmosphere is great, service is great, and its just great overall. The only not fun part is parking but that is just a problem that is all around Houston.

  • *****

This is where you go when you're considering Pappasito's. Don't do it. Come here instead.

We are from out of town and found this place on Yelp since it was only a few miles from the Medical Center. Was a little difficult finding it, but so glad we did! Atmosphere was unique, and the margaritas and food were amazing! We filled up on appetizers - loved the white queso and grilled chicken served with fresh tortillas! Perfect little cantina to get away from the big chains. Will visit again when we come to Houston!

  • *****

Awesome chilaquiles. Service was a bit slow, but I really enjoyed it.

I feel like this place is continuously overshadowed by its next door neighbor, Backstreet Cafe. The service is nice. The salsa and chips are decent. Love all the breakfast items and the cute little patio! Yeah, parking is a B**** but what can you do?

Love this little spot. They are dog friendly and have an amazing outdoor seating environment. You are surrounded with green leaves and almost forget you are surrounded by the concrete streets of Houston. The food and tequila options are endless and the service is great. I would recommend this place to anyone.

  • *****

Pros; warm salsa that is wonderfully seasoned with tortilla chips and plantains. Sea bass meal was the shit. So good.

Cons; ordered a side of veggies and was brought one slice of a carrot, one slice of zucchini and one slice of squash. Very decorative but not something I'd consider a side. Potatoes weren't anything special. I'd suggest rice. Online it says they close at 11pm but when we got there they said 10pm. Lame.

  • *****

Very nice patio, it is close to Shepherd which on the main street so there is a bit of noise but otherwise very cozy. Great margaritas and excellent food.

  • *****

The people are always so friendly at Tila's! It's hard not to be anything but relaxed in the atmosphere, with the good service, and delicious margaritas :)

Ate here with a friend about a week ago, Saturday night. I had seen the mixed reviews but it's right down the street from my place and we had been wanting to try it for a while. I am glad we did and was pleasantly surprised.

I will say it was not very busy, the patio outside had quite a few people but it was a little hot for us so we sat inside. There were no other customers inside. The service was quick and personal. We ordered margaritas and the waiter/bartender gave us a choice of three types of tequila. We ordered house but he suggested a step up from that. They were somewhat small but very good and hand mixed.

The chips and salsa came with plantain chips in addition to tortilla chips, which was a nice variation from the usual. I ordered Endive Chicken which was delicious. My friend ordered Enchiladas which he enjoyed also.

I'll be back and recommend that you give Tila's a try.

  • *****

The parking lot is on the small side, but the green chicken enchiladas and chips with plantains mixed in are amazing.

  • *****

Great atmosphere, especially on the patio. Great flavored margaritas and tequila selection in a beautiful part of River Oaks

Carne asada "the man's way" (medium rare).
The presentation of the dish itself was very beautiful. I had side of retried back beans and rice. Watch out for the carrot crumbs as the server serves you the dish they may fall on you.

The skirt steak was very tender and juicy. Nice warm red center. "The mans way"

The roasted potato with the Rosemary stuck in it was the best roasted potato I had in my life. I got an extra side of it.

Only problem I had was utensils were not provided when by the time our appetizer came out. It was busy and I only saw two servers.

I recommend this place for brunch and don't forget to order a mimosa.

  • *****

Tila's was an exciting discovery for us! We frequently dine out and Tila's is now on our top of everything list! The margarita was simply the best ever, the chips and salsa (tortilla & plantain chips).

  • *****

Wonderful food, atmosphere, margaritas, and waiter!

  • *****

Took a bit longer than usual for food; however, the quality and taste of the food was worth the wait. The goat cheese stuffed Filet Mignon is fantastic!

  • *****

Absolutely the best margaritas ever. Order your own premium tequila and let them work their magic. Go ahead and get the pitcher--it just saves time. Perfect after work place for drinks and hors-d'oeuvres.

  • *****

Food was great and fresh. Margaritas were amazing! Also, the banana chips with the salsa were unique and tasty. We love to eat at dog friendly places and they went the extra mile and brought our dog water, and a plate of doggy snacks. Joseph our waiter was very helpful, attentive, and knowledgable. You have to ask for him!

  • *****

Best carne asada I've ever had! Juicy, tender (medium rare) and very tasty. I always ask for the garlic sauce! Heaven!!!

  • *****

This is on elf my favorites. Especially because they have all the great Tequila to go with. It really tastes good. The small outdoor space is nice although it is at Shepherd. You guys should try it!

  • *****

Hands down the best Mexican food and Margaritas inside the loop (the Margaritas are always fabulous but had it with Kah Reposado this time). Always a great experience when we go there. And thanks to our server Kimberly for recommending the Tres Chocolate - it was a delight.

  • *****

My wife and I love the eggs dishes. The banana and other bread basket is delicious. We have enjoyed all of the meals that we have had there. Our favorite times are Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is not hectic and one can enjoy conversation in a pleasant atmosphere. The wait staff have always been courteous and very helpful without being too much so. We have recommended Tila's to friends and they have reported being pleased with the food and service. We look forward to our next experience there. It is worth the minor inconvenience of the construction. Don't let that stop you from enjoying this unique restaurant.

My fiance and I stumbled upon Tilas in August of 2014 by mistake and it was one of the best mistakes we've ever made. Tilas is by far the best Mexican restaurant we've ever experienced. And Now every time we are in the Houston area we cannot leave until we have had our Tilas fix.

    Authentic
Best mexican restaurant.\nFresh ingredient, Value for your money.\nNo frozen, prepared food\nBest salsa in town

  • *****

    Great little place
While I would agree that Tila's is not the most authentic Mexican food in Houston, it is, however, extremely tasty fare. Difficult to characterize with a single ethnicity, especially with dishes such as the pear and brie quesadilla (which is wonderful, by the by), it does seem to have a new southwestern/mexican edge. Only big drawback is the abyssmal parking situation, on par with it's tasty neighbor Backstreet Cafe. Both places would highly benefit from a better parking situation.

  • *****

    Fun, different Mexican experience
If you're looking for a fun, casual atmosphere for Mexican, choose Tila's! It has fabulous outdoor dining, and the chicken endive is to die for. Great margaritas, too!

  • *****

    Unique, Spicy, Relaxed... Tasty!!
Tilas is a wonderfully decorated, well-situated mexican restaurant just north of the confluence of West Grey and Shepard. It's packed with all sorts of interesting Mexican art, but is still full of room to relax and enjoy the excellent food. The atmosphere is softenend by the warm colors, and the outdoor deck, with its overhanging plants, offers a sense of intimacy while still being outdoors. Their margaritas are excellent, and their triple chocolate cake is, well... to die for!\nMexican standards are well-prepared, and for the vegitarians, Tilas offers a bevvy of tasty meal options.\nHighly recommended.

Going to the bar? Ask for Alex. Alex is one of the best bartenders in town, and with an awesome sense of humor, he can make anyone's bad day turn good. Looking to dine? Ask for Manuel, you'll never go wrong. Like Alex, he's been there for years, and he's the best!\n\nThe best items are: 1) Chilean Sea Bass (an off-the-menu item) 2) Stuffed Filet Mignon, and 3) Pork Tenderloin Medallions. As for desserts - diabetics need not try the Ancho Fudge pie. The word ""decadence"" does not begin to describe this fantastic desert. \n\nMargaritas are served on-the-rocks or straight-up (choose the later - you'll get more!) and Tilas stocks what is perhaps the largest selection of tequila in Houston. In the mood for something different? Ask for the raspberry margarita its made with freshly pureed raspberries. For the tequila connoisseur - ask to see their tequila list!

    Great First Impression!
My 1st time experience was great for service, food, staff attention. Whoever said the salsa was too hot needs to go back north. I'm Texas born and it was not hot. Both the green and red salsas were just right. The salmon marinated in tequila and the trio of enchiladas was great! I'll definitely go back. The margarita I had straight up was great also.

    You must try it!
Tila's is a unique favorite of mine. I;ve been going here every month or so for the past four years. The patio dining is great in the summer, and they make awesome gazpacho and margaritas. In the winter, dine inside and get cozy with their roasted red bell pepper soup or the carrot corn bisque. I have to admit I sometimes come here just to fill up on their amazing chips and (warm) red and green salsa, and just get a bowl of soup... but they've always been gracious whether you're ordering a lot or a little.

Best Food in Town - and you'll want to hire their decorator!
While their mexican food may not be 'authentico' it is muy excellente! They will make it as spicy as you like [and for a gal from San Antone, that's pretty darn spicy!] and will not forget to check on your table. I took my friend from California here and he had never had such good 'ritas. Their margaritas, compared to most of those I've tried my year and a half of living in Houston, actually are pretty darn good :) Their salsa is decent, nothing amazing, but pleasant - and their fun mixture of chips and fried plantains are enjoyable I have to admit, though, I am taken by their endive-stuff chicken - it's amazing. And I mean that - A-MA-ZING! If you haven't been to Tila's (like I hadn't before a few months ago) what are you waiting for? \r\nIf you think it looks adorable located on the curve on Kirby, just wait till you park and go on inside! I NEED to know who decorated that place because it is so gorgeous, magical, and cute - I would love my house to have that feel. \r\n\r\nA feast for the tummy and the eyes :)

Great Sunday afternoon hangout on the patio!
I read below about the slow service and I wanted to comment on that. The food is well worth the wait. I'm happy that they take the time to prepare the food perfectly. Yes, that's right, perfectly. The food tastes as great as it looks. Very nice presentation. The menu is quite extensive for how small of a place it is. I love the grilled scallions and roasted ear of corn appetizers. Not a big margarita fan but I like Tila's. Great tequila list! Last weekend I brought my dog. Tila brought ""Stanley"" a bowl of water which I VERY much appreciated. My daughter just adores Tila. Tila gives her the star treatment! Tila's is a warm, wonderful place!

    great atmosphere and great margaritas
Tila's has a very warm, inviting atmosphere. It's a great place to go with a few friends.\r\nI love their homemade margaritas they're so much better than the frozen ones you'll find at other mexican restaurants. They have an incredible variety of tequila too - just ask for their tequila list and you'll see for yourself.

    Yummy-oso!
This is what it says on the menu and it is TRUE. You have to try the agua de orchata with the fudge ancho pie. A combination you cannot miss!!! Or the Ceviche!! Yummmm!!! Or the enchiladas the mole!!! Or if you are a healthy one, try the chicken caesar salad, it is like no other!!! I have been at TILA'S many times and I have never been disappointed. Try it and if you are worried about parking...you shouldn't be. Their valet service is wonderful and FREE. What else can you ask for.

    Good times here.
I have dined here several times over the years. I have had the funnest times on the patio in the fall when they turn on the outdoor heaters - great for dates. The food is always fresh and not loaded down with cheesy oil (like other mexican food). Salsas are good too and go well with the banana chips. Ritas could be a bit stiffer though :)

    Fun place for different food
I am a huge Tex-Mex fan and this is what I was expecting here, but I was pleasantly surprised by the food, which was still Mexican but definitely of a different flavor. The authentic quesadillas were amazing, as were the chilequiles with green sauce. The appetizer taquitos, however, were the highlight of my meal. The outdoor patio is fun to sit on, and the interior of the restaurant is decorated in a very fun way as well. I can't wait to go back.

    Great food and friendly owner
My girlfriend and I came in from Chicago to visit a friend and we went to dinner at Tila's last night. The host was very friendly and helpful in getting us seats at the bar for the few minutes we had to wait for a table. We found the staff to be very friendly and concerned with making sure we enjoyed our dinner. The owner came out personally to clarify how our friend wanted her margarita, and she was very hands on throughout the entire evening, giving us supplemental information about the specials and stopping by to check on us. The food was excellent - unique dishes (particularly the specials), the right amount of spice and pretty healthy (at least on a relative basis). The prices were also very reasonable. \r\n\r\nOverall, we had an excellent experience at TIla's and we would highly recommend it.\r\n\r\n

    Great food and atmosphere!
We traveled over 50 miles for dinner and a show in Houston a couple of weeks ago, and we decided on Tila's simply from reading restaurant reviews online. That can sometimes be a risk, but the reviews were top notch, so we gave it a try. We could not have been more satisfied with our entire experience. The food was perfection, the margaritas were great, the atmosphere was relaxing and fun, and the staff was supreme. Our waiter was quite friendly but not overbearing, and he even sent a staff member over who had been to the nearby comedy club we were going to give us directions and make sure we took the best route. We were treated like royalty and have returned home to tell all our friends, family and coworkers about Tila's. We were given a menu upon leaving and we've shared it with many who are very anxious to go try it out. This restaurant is highly recommended and we plan to return this coming weekend!

    Wonderful!
Tilas is wonderful! In our experience, the service is outstanding. It is best to go later in the night if it is on a weekend or on a weekday when things are less hectic. My boyfriend and I eat there frequently and we have never had a bad dish. The grilled chicken is the best I have ever had, the gazpacho is filling and delicious, and the ensalada one is a dream. Definitely eat here! It is romantic and trendy all at once.

    Great Food, Service and Tequila!
My husband and I were looking for a new place to meet some friends for dinner and tequila tasting when we found Tila's. We had the best time sampling tequilas and eating some great mexican food! We ordered several appetizers, carne asada and chicken enchilades, all of which were incredible. Then was the true test of a mexican restaurant......the margarita. Most places use sweet & sour and call it a ""margarita"". I was thrilled when I found out that Tila makes REAL margaritas, no sweet & sour to be found! If you're looking for great food, service and tequila then Tila's is for you! Frank took care of us all night and before we knew it, we had been there for almost 4 wonderful hours. I can't wait to go back for more! Thanks Tila's!!

best waiter in a mexican restaurant
i just recently went to a great mexican restaurant on the curve of south shepherd in the river oaks this weekend. my husband and our freinds were so impressed by the food and most important the waiter we had. His name was Frank and he remembered all of our names at the table. We ordered one of all the specials he mentioned to us. His tequila knowledge blew us away not being latino, we were wowed especially by his little jokes. Tila sure can cook! This food is no TexMex. If you want a real mole sauce, Tila has got it! Ask for Frank if you want to be treated like royalty! Dont forget the plates are hot, like Frank said to my wife, This plate is muy calliente, just like you! I can only say ask for Frank, eat here, and be ready to have good food great service and a good time.....

We sat outside on the patio for brunch, and it was a very nice atmosphere. I had chilequiles with scrambled egg which was delicious! My bf had the juevos rancheros and he was equally impressed. The margaritas were good as well. Bloody mary is too spicy though. \r\n

    Great Food and Wine
95% of Mexican Restaurants in Houston are Tex-Mex. This one is real authentic Mexican food and it is delicious. It is a great place to take a date. It has good atmosphere, and the service is outstanding. I had the rotiserre half chicken and I had to take some of it home because I got full. It is also reasonablly priced so you can be cheap without appearing to be cheap. I highly reccommed this restaurant.

Amazing Dining Experience - Food & Service FABULOUS!!
My mom and I went to Tilas and had an amazing experience!! We brought the dog so we had to sit outside... Tilas brough me a blanket and a personal heater to keep warm...then brough doggy treats and water for the dog. And then recommended the BEST margaritas we have ever had! Delicious. My mom had the cheese souffle (yummy) and I had a Carne Asada which were both definite ""do overs!"" overall an exceptional dining experience!! Definitely a place you should try in Houston!

    Fantastic restaurant
I frequently visit Tila's for lunch and dinner. This time, the day was late, and my date and I went just to try out several varieties of the restaurant's tequilas at the bar. Our bartender, Roberto, was very knowledgeable, attentive, friendly and offered great advice. Then, we had the privilege of spending some time with the owner, Tila. She was absolutely delightful and genuinely interested in our experience. I have never been disappointed when visiting Tila's and heartily recommend it without hesitation.

    Tila's is Best in Houston
What can I say? Every time I have been to Tila's it has been fantastic. The menu has a great authentic feel with a wide variety of flavors and foods for everyone. From the first time I have been over 8 years ago till now it has been amazing.\n\nStarting of from the time you arrive until the time you leave the service is great! You will enjoy the atmosphere outside on cool summer nights with the small chimeneas to the blankets and heaters available. Also, the tequila list is long and has a wide variety, which makes a great option for their margaritas. \n\nOne thing that really captured me was the fried plantains tucked away in the bucket of thin, crispy chips cooked to perfection. The red and green sauces for dipping are mucho delicioso, but I prefer the red over the green because it is spicy.\n\nThe owner is great as well! She will come by and talk to you, make some great recommendations for what you like and help match with a great margarita. The food is simply divine and as i said covers a wide variety, which I love. \n\nI have been there many weeks and I feel like I am becoming a regular to one of the best places in Houston. I cant wait to go back and have some of their tres leches, or Tila-Misu!!! \n\nForget about the traditional Tex-Mex and take a break from the Houston hustle and bustle and escape with a nice Margarita to Tila's right off of Shepherd and Memorial!

    Great experience at Tila's
I love Tila's unique spin on mexican food. Their food is always fresh & flavorful. I especially love their ceviche, gazpacho & stuffed avocado. Their margaritas are some of the best in the city...using fresh lime juice. Their warm salsa is to die for! We will be returning soon!

    Carne asada to die for!
I've known Tila for over 20 years and have always enjoyed the presentation of her entrees almost as much as tasting them. If you've never been to Tila's, I recommend her carne asada with creamed spinach and roasted potatoes. It is quite phenomenal. In fact, I can't even think of the appropriate adjective to describe the juiciest, most flavorful meal I have ever had. Oh, by the way, order it with the garlic sauce! Guess where I'm going after I send this comment?!! Yep!

Tila makes me feel so welcome!!!!
This is a review not only for Tila's Restaurant but also a testimony for the wonderfulness of its owner, Tila. The food is terrific! Every time I go I get something different which quickly becomes my new favorite. I probably have had the Pork Medallions the most and each time they've been incredible. I would have licked the plate if I wasn't in public! So the food being outstanding is a given. But what makes Tila's truly unique is, well, Tila! Before I continue, I should tell you that I am somewhat disfigured by a disorder called neurofibromatosis. In fact, I have what is considered a severe case. Because of this disfigurement, I don't like to go out in public because I don't want anybody to feel uncomfortable around me. Luckily, a friend of mine brought me to Tila's after the Art Car Parade last year and I almost cried! When we entered the restaurant, we were immediately welcomed by Tila as if we were old friends. She guided us to a great table by the bar and fussed over us for about 5 minutes. I told her about my disorder and I could tell that she was about to cry before she left the table. Five minutes later, the waiter arrived with complimentary appetizers; ceviche, guacamole and queso with tortillas! During the meal, she came by to make sure everything was good and surprised us by picking up the check!!! I asked if I could take my picture with her and she said, ""No, let me take a picture with you!"" Then she invited all the servers that were nearby to join us in the photo. When we left she made me promise to come back as soon as I could and now we are Facebook friends. I think sometimes it just as important to rate a restaurant by how they treat you as much as how good the food is. I love Tila as much as I love her food, which is a lot! My name is Reggie Bibbs and I approve of this review.

My wife and I love the egg dishes in particular but have enjoyed everything we have had at Tila's. We have good reports from friends to whom we have recommended Tila's. The wait staff has been very good with just the right amount of help and friendliness.

We particularly like Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is possible to enjoy conversation with the food.

Don't let the minor inconvenience of the City construction keep you away.

Had a great meal tonight. I got the sea bass special and it was absolutely amazing. Sea bass topped with shrimp served over some sort of mole sauce. Eaten here many times and this was the best I have ever had.

Such an underrated restaurant in a great location!

Amazing food from one of their taco trucks. Only four stars because the owner was so rude. I said I didn't want avocado on my sopes. Apparently I greatly offended her. Whatever. Great food. Great prices.

Came here for brunch with my wife and new puppy and had a great time and enjoyed the food and service. They give you chips with small plantains made fresh. We started with a fruit plate which was crisp and fresh. I had the heovos bendictos which was amazing! Probably one of best I had in Houston. Wife had a egg white dish that pretty good as well.

They also have live music that a real treat and the decor - ambience is great for sitting on the patio.

The drinks are a bit pricey tho. Definitely would recommend to a friend. It's a hidden gem and try the heovos bendictos!

I went to happy hour which is 5-7 on M-F and offers $5 Margaritas and half-price appetizers. The plantain chips are phenomenal and they come with two different salsas (red and green), which was all around delicious. The Chicken Azteca meal was amazing and I highly recommend. Excited to go back and sit on the patio!

I've been here so many times I can't count. Authentic Mexican food. It's delicious and unpretentious. Nice patio that is super dog friendly. They provide treats and water in nice stainless steel bowls. What more can you ask for? Happy hour is great too. I recommend migas for brunch, nachos for lunch and sea bass for dinner.

We stopped for a night drink and ended up with two amazing drinks and great service. I had a Margarita and my girl had a Michelata with Pacifico beer. Awesome. The cerviche was the bomb and the avocado halves were so good. Ana the bartender was friendly and loved her. Sergio the owner bought us and shot which ended up buying a Skelton tequila bottle to take home.

    Highly recommend

We stopped at Tilas' for a drink (or two ) and dessert after having brunch elsewhere. We sat at the bar and Tila herself made the drinks! She was super nice and recommended some dessert options for us to try. The drinks were delicious, we had the Margarita and Paloma. The Margarita was my favorite. It is served Mexico City style, in a martini glass with a super cute tub full of ice. I typically don't eat grapefruit unless I'm detoxing lol but after Tila insisted I should try it, I did. Omg!! It was freaking delicious!!! The grapefruit was glazed with piloncillo (basically unrefined brown sugar) and baked in the oven long enough for the piloncillo to melt. Needless to say, I went home and raved about it to my mom. I will definitely be back for dinner or lunch!

    Authentic Best mexican restaurant.

Fresh ingredient, Value for your money.

    No frozen, prepared food

Great little place While I would agree that Tila's is not the most authentic Mexican food in Houston, it is, however, extremely tasty fare.

  • *****

Revisit Tila Hidalgo Leach's oldie-but-goodie for authentic Mexican specialties in artsy surroundings. The Scene
Take it to Tila's tiny terra-cotta adobe for smooth margaritas and earthy, Santa Fe-style ambience. Expect a well-heeled clientele who are comfortable forking over extra pesos to hang in their element and nosh on designer Mexican food.

    The Food
Sophisticated eating starts with rosy, tequila-marinated smoked salmon or rich nutmeg-laced corn and carrot bisque. Don't let the poorly dressed ensalada No. 1 derail you. Keep it complex with engaging (albeit uneven) mains: stuffed chicken endive or spicy pork tenderloin medallions with basil-mint pesto. Or go traditional with tangy, chili-sauced spinach enchiladas and smoky black beans, deftly prepared chili rellenos, or generous tortas stuffed with roasted carnitas and the works. Finish with the dubious sounding but decadent ancho fudge pie or cinnamon-kissed Mexican hot cocoa--both wickedly warming.

  • *****

Fun, different Mexican experience If you're looking for a fun, casual atmosphere for Mexican, choose Tila's!

Their margaritas are excellent, and their triple chocolate cake is, well... to die for!

Mexican standards are well-prepared, and for the vegitarians, Tilas offers a bevvy of tasty meal options.

    Highly recommended.

User review by jpclarkmba Going to the bar? Ask for Alex. Alex is one of the best bartenders in town, and with an awesome sense of humor, he can make anyone's bad day turn good. Looking to dine? Ask for Manuel, you'll never go wrong. Like Alex, he's been there for years, and he's the best!

The best items are: 1) Chilean Sea Bass (an off-the-menu item) 2) Stuffed Filet Mignon, and 3) Pork Tenderloin Medallions. As for desserts - diabetics need not try the Ancho Fudge pie. The word "decadence" does not begin to describe this fantastic desert.

Margaritas are served on-the-rocks or straight-up (choose the later - you'll get more!) and Tilas stocks what is perhaps the largest selection of tequila in Houston.

If you think it looks adorable located on the curve on Kirby, just wait till you park and go on inside! I NEED to know who decorated that place because it is so gorgeous, magical, and cute - I would love my house to have that feel.

A feast for the tummy and the eyes :)

Tila brought "Stanley" a bowl of water which I VERY much appreciated. My daughter just adores Tila. Tila gives her the star treatment! Tila's is a warm, wonderful place!

What else can you ask for.

great atmosphere and great margaritas Tila's has a very warm, inviting atmosphere. It's a great place to go with a few friends.

I love their homemade margaritas they're so much better than the frozen ones you'll find at other mexican restaurants. They have an incredible variety of tequila too - just ask for their tequila list and you'll see for yourself.

My name is Reggie Bibbs and I approve of this review.

    Homey Atmosphere
We eat at this restaurant at least once a month. The carrot corn bisque is wonderful. The service is always prompt, friendly, and consistent. The portion sizes are small, just like in Mexico. However, all the menu items are excellent. Very authentic! Thanks Tila for the true taste of Mexico.
